Sustainable Mine Water Treatment; Upgrading Natural Processes

Sustainable treatment of mine drainage is becoming more relevant when considering energy requirements, use of raw materials and generation of waste products that require additional disposal. Passive treatment sequentially removes contaminants and/or acidity in a man-made biosystems that capitalizes on the ecology and geochemical reactions coupled with physical sequestration. The process does not require power or chemical additions after construction and can last for decades with minimal human intervention. SLR are experienced in assessing the feasibility of implementing passive treatment systems for a wide variety of mine waters, each requiring a unique solution to often complex water quality problems.
