Salman Bal, born in Turkey in 1972 and originally from Birsfelden BL, has built a distinguished career in international relations. He graduated from the University of Geneva and the Geneva Institute of International Relations with a Master's degree in International Relations. Additionally, he earned a Master's degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex in the UK.
From 1999 to 2001, Mr. Bal first worked as a human rights observer for the OSCE in Kosovo. Following this, he served as a human rights expert with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. In 2001, he joined the diplomatic service at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and was posted to Bern and Mexico City as an intern. His diplomatic journey continued in 2003 when he returned to the headquarters in Switzerland, where he worked as Deputy Special Representative for Sudan.
In 2007, Mr. Bal was transferred to Oslo as Deputy Head of Mission. By 2011, he became Deputy Head of Multilateral Cooperation and Head of the specialized international organizations section at the Swiss mission to the UN in Geneva. His expertise in diplomacy and international relations led to his appointment in 2015 as head of the political division in the Office of the UN Director-General in Geneva.
Since May 2019, Mr. Bal served as the Director (with the title of ambassador) of the Geneva Welcome Center (CAGI) in Geneva. In 2023, he took on a new role as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Switzerland to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, marking another significant milestone in his career.
